Pamela leads this month’s journey with a discussion of Mark Adams’ memoir Turn Right at Machu Picchu.
For the centennial of the discovery of Machu Picchu by Hiram Bingham, travel and adventure magazine writer and editor Mark Adams did something he’d never done before: set out on a travel adventure of his own. Led by an antisocial Australian survivalist, he went into the Andes Mountains of Peru to investigate modern-day allegations against Bingham that he was a villain who took the credit for a discovery not his own, and smuggling out priceless artifacts in the process. Tracing Bingham’s own journey, and relating the foibles of his own, Adams brings readers along to discover the answer to the nagging question: Just what is Machu Picchu anyway?
